Big Eye Boy (大眼仔路) is the first of the three derived roads, and the first place most players give up. Search for an explanation and you will find long lists of conditions, special cases and exceptions.
There are no exceptions. Big Eye Boy asks two questions, over and over, and which one it asks depends only on what the Big Road just did. Learn those two and you have not just learned Big Eye Boy — you have learned all three derived roads, because the other two run the identical procedure from further away.
What Big Eye Boy actually measures
It is not a record of hands. Nothing on Big Eye Boy comes from the table. It is calculated from the Big Road, and it measures one thing: has the Big Road been repeating its own shape?
Think of it as a repetitiveness meter with a memory of one column. Each time a new mark lands on the Big Road, Big Eye Boy compares what just happened against the column one position to the left, and records whether the answer came back the same or different.
When does Big Eye Boy start?
It needs a little Big Road history before it has anything to compare against. It begins at whichever of these two moments arrives first:
- Column 2, Row 2 — the Big Road went down into a second entry in its second column, or
- Column 3, Row 1 — Column 2 only ever got one mark, so the road waits until Column 3 opens.
Both cases, on the smallest boards that produce them:
The Small Road starts one column later than this, and Cockroach Pig one later again, for exactly the same reason: each looks further back, so each needs more history first.
The two questions
Every Big Eye Boy mark is the answer to one of these. Which one applies is decided entirely by what the Big Road just did.
Question A — the Big Road started a new column
Compare the depth of the column that just finished with the depth of the column one further back.
- Same depth → red.
- Different depth → blue.
In plain terms: did the shoe just produce a streak the same length as the one before last?
Question B — the Big Road moved down a column
Look at the column one position to the left, at the row you just landed on and the row directly above it.
- Both cells filled, or both cells empty → red. The reference column gave the same answer twice.
- One filled and one empty → blue. The reference column changed its answer.

Mark by mark
Work through the first seven and the road stops being mysterious. The Big Road column depths are 2, 3, 3, 1, 2, 2, 1 …
- Red. Big Road went down to Column 2, Row 2 — Question B. Reference is Column 1, which is 2 deep, so Row 2 and Row 1 are both filled. Same answer twice.
- Blue. Column 2, Row 3. Column 1 is only 2 deep, so Row 3 is empty while Row 2 is filled. The answer changed.
- Blue. New column — Question A. Column 2 finished 3 deep; Column 1 was 2 deep. Different.
- Red. Column 3, Row 2 — Question B. Column 2 is 3 deep, so Rows 1 and 2 are both filled. Same twice.
- Red. Column 3, Row 3. Column 2 reaches Row 3 too. Same twice again.
- Red. New column — Question A. Column 3 finished 3 deep and Column 2 was 3 deep. Equal, so the shoe repeated itself and Big Eye Boy says so.
- Blue. New column again. Column 4 was only 1 deep against Column 3’s 3. Different.
Check those against the diagram: red, blue, blue, red, red, red, blue. That is the entire road — the same two questions, nineteen times.
And the case that looks broken
The fourteenth mark is red, and at a glance it should not be. The Big Road is coming down Column 8 to Row 3. The reference column is Column 7, which only ever had a single mark — so Row 3 and Row 2 there are both empty.
Both empty is the same answer twice, so the mark is red. Nothing is wrong with the board. If that still feels backwards, re-read the highlighted note above: the road is asking whether the answer changed, not whether anything is there.
Why is it called Big Eye Boy?
It is a rendering of the Cantonese 大眼仔, roughly “big-eyed boy”. The usual explanation is that its grid of hollow circles looks like rows of wide-open eyes. Like Cockroach Pig, the name is descriptive of the drawing, not of any meaning — the hollow circle is simply the convention that distinguishes this road from the Small Road’s filled circles and Cockroach Pig’s slashes.
What Big Eye Boy cannot tell you
This deserves stating precisely for a derived road, because their arithmetic makes them feel more analytical than the Big Road. They are not. Big Eye Boy is computed entirely from Big Road columns that already exist — it contains no information the Big Road did not already have. It reorganises history; it does not extend it. A screen full of red means the shoe has repeated itself so far, which is a statement in the past tense about cards that have already been dealt.
