Sooner or later a baccarat board does something that looks like a mistake: a column of results stops going down and starts running sideways along the bottom of the grid. That shape is called the dragon tail, and it is the board working exactly as intended.
It has one obvious cause and one that is almost always left out of explanations. The second one is why boards frequently bend where you do not expect them to.
What a dragon tail is
The Big Road grid is six rows deep. A streak fills a column downward, one mark per win. On the seventh consecutive win there is no seventh row to move into — so the streak turns right and continues horizontally along the bottom row.
The result is a long low horizontal run trailing off to the right, which is where the name comes from. It is not a special kind of result or a different type of streak. It is the same streak, drawn around a corner because the paper ran out.
A shoe with a real one
Twenty-five hands: two Players, then twelve straight Bankers, then nine straight Players, then one of each to close. Every board below is drawn by the same road engine that powers our free Road Decoder:

Trace the Banker streak: six marks straight down the column, then six more running right along Row 6. Twelve hands, one streak, one column — bent.
The second reason a column bends
Now look at the Player streak that follows. It is nine hands long, so by the simple rule it should go six down and then bend. It does not. It comes down five rows and turns right at Row 5.
The reason is sitting underneath it. Row 6 is already occupied by the Banker tail, and a column cannot overwrite marks that are already there. So the Player streak bends one row early and runs along Row 5 instead, draped directly over the tail below it.
A single long streak early in a shoe can therefore change the shape of everything drawn after it. That is not a quirk of any one casino’s display — it is standard, and any tool that reproduces a board has to do it.
How long is long enough?
Seven, if the column starts at Row 1 on an empty six-row grid. But the trigger is running out of room, not hitting a magic number:
- A streak arriving above an existing tail bends as soon as it reaches it — our nine-hand Player streak bent after five.
- Several tails can stack, each bending a row higher than the one below, which is what produces the layered staircase look on a board late in a busy shoe.
- Some displays use a grid deeper or shallower than six rows; the rule is identical, only the bend row changes.
The derived roads bend too
Big Eye Boy, the Small Road and Cockroach Pig are drawn on the same six-row grids and obey the same two conditions. A long run of one color on a derived road produces a tail exactly the way a long winning streak does on the Big Road.
What the shape does not mean
A dragon tail is visually dramatic, which is precisely why it gets over-interpreted. It is worth separating the drawing from the meaning.
The tail exists because the grid has six rows. If the display were ten rows deep, the same twelve hands would draw as a tall column and no tail at all — identical results, different picture. Nothing about the shoe changed; only the paper did.
The hand that follows the longest streak on the board has exactly the same odds as the hand that follows the shortest. Streaks of this length are entirely ordinary across the thousands of hands a table deals: they stand out on the board because the board is designed to make them stand out.
Where the name comes from
“Dragon” is the common table name for a long streak — you will hear players call the streak itself a dragon and the sideways run its tail. It is descriptive table slang rather than formal terminology, so usage varies between rooms; some players use “dragon” only for the bent portion, others for any streak long enough to bend.
